I was born on 22nd April 1974 in Reading, Berkshire, an industrial town just a little further down the M4 from London than Slough. My father had a varied career which included working as a Fire Protection Design Engineer (for TPT) as well as a Milkman and as a insurance salesman for the Co-Op. My mother worked at Halmark cards and then as a secretary at the Maths Department at the University of Reading for 20 years. I have a younger sister who currently lives in the South West with her husband and two children.
I attended Earley St Peters Primary School, moved onto Bulmershe Secondary School (and then Sixth Form) before studying for a BSc in Business Information Systems (which was a degree in Management and Computing) at Thames Valley University in Slough. After University I worked as a Software Engineer eventually moving to Cambridge in early 2002 and slightly changing my role to be a Software Engineer/ Business Analyst. Currenty I work in the IT Department of Napp Pharmaceuticals on the Cambridge Science Park.
I've lived in King's Hedges between 2002 and 2010 - first in College Fields (off Woodhead Drive) then at Nuns Way and finally in Augustus Close (just off Minerva Way). In 2010 I moved to Bar Hill, just down the A14 in South Cambridgeshire.
At about the time I moved to Cambridge I joined the
Liberal Democrats as a deliverer. There are many reasons why I picked the Liberal Democrats - the top one is undoubtably their commitment to the European Union.
In 2004 I married Petra Averbeck at Cambridgeshire Registry Office, on September 11th 2008 we had our first daughter, Hayden Bethany, and our first son, Aaron Reiner, on December 3rd 2010 (delivered by my wife in the corridor leading to the materinity ward - but that's another story).
In 2007 I joined the Organising Committee of the
Arbury Carnival (which due to boundary changes many years ago actually takes place in King's Hedges!). This was in answer to a call for local volunteers after a shortage had become so acute that the Committee had to temporarily suspend the procession part as everything was being organised by only two people!
In 2008 I also became a trustee of the
Arbury Community Centre (joining fellow Councillors Liberal Democrat
Neil McGovern and Labour Arbury Councillor
Mike Todd-Jones as well as other representitives of the local community). As part of this community-based role I also became first a Director and then Chairman of the Board of Directors for Arbouretum Cafe - the Community Centre's trading arm.
In 2009 I put my name forward as a potential candidate in the
Cambridgeshire County Council elections. The election was faught against a Labour opposition at a time when the national Labour governement was training in the polls (to put it mildly) and I won with
39.2% of the vote.
Since my election I have become a Local Education Authority (LEA) Governor of
Manor Community College, and in April 2010 I was elected as Chair of Governors.
I am a semi-regular contributor to
Google Knol offering mainly IT-related items, I have also provided help and support to Parliamentary Candidates in the 2010 election most notably
Belinda Brooks-Gordon.
